3/9/12 There have been reports of Mr. Shankar's death. I even posted this on his Facebook page: "May you rest in peace, Mr. Shankar. You've been a wonderful musician and teacher to George Harrison, one of my favorite guitarists ever. Thank you & bless the Shankar family." BUT it may be another Ravi Shankar. I got the news from Beatles news. The Ravi we know is 91 years old now, but the reported Ravi who passed away was 88 when he died. Visit his website. http://www.ravishankar.org/

What do you know?! Love You To is playing on my radio right now. It must be a sign :]

Correction: Earlier we reported that Indian sitar musician Ravi Shankar, who taught sitar to George Harrison, had died. We're sorry, that wasn't correct. It was Ravi Shankar Sharma who died on Wednesday. Ravi Shankar Sharma was also an Indian musician, and a music director in Bollywood. We're sorry for reporting the incorrect info about Ravi Shankar. -BeatlesNews

Anyway, we can talk about Indian instruments here, like the sitar, and Beatles songs that feature it!

The Byrds recorded at the same studio and heard Shankar's music, which led them to incorporate some of its elements in theirs, introducing the genre to their friend George Harrison of The Beatles. Harrison became interested in Indian classical music, bought a sitar and used it to record the song "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)". This led to Indian music being used by other musicians and created the raga rock trend. -Wiki

I was looking through my music history book, and weirdly, after I flipped a few pages (it's 500 pages) it led me to a page on Ravi!

Aww. :-( This actually became true. 2 Ravi Shankars died this year.

R.I.P. RAVI SHANKAR

Shankar Family Statement:

It is with heavy hearts we write to inform you that Pandit Ravi Shankar, husband, father, and musical soul, passed away today, December 11th, 2012.
As you all know, his health has been fragile for the past several years and on Thursday he underwent a surgery that could have potentially given him a new lease of life.
The surgeons and doctors - Dr. Robert Brunst, Dr. Scott Eisman, and Dr. Martin Charlat - all did tremendous work and the procedure was successful. However, the condition of his lungs just made the recovery difficult. We were at his side when he passed away.
We know that you all feel our loss with us, and we thank you for all of your prayers and good wishes through this difficult time. Although it is a time for sorrow and sadness, it is also a time for all of us to give thanks and to be grateful that we were able to have him as a part of our lives. His spirit and his legacy will live on forever in our hearts and in his music.

Sukanya & Anoushka Shankar

So Sad!! :-(( Yes, I seen this about Ravi Shanker on the news. Although I didn't know about the Two Ravi Shankers, thanks for pointing that out! George Loved him! He was a big influence in George's life. And a Great friend and teacher to George. A lot about it in George Harrison: Living In A Material World! George got into the Sitar during the filming of Help. He was interested in the sound from the Indian Music  that was in that scene in Help. Some friends mentioned to him, have you heard Ravi Shanker's music? He met Ravi sometime after Help. A lot of musicians got into the Sitar and Indian music sound after hearing it in Norwegian Wood! Such as The Stones and others. You can hear a lot of the Sitar in various songs from the 60's! Ravi became famous around the world after Woodstock and the Concert for Bangladesh.

Found this about Norwegian Wood: Harrison—who would later be strongly influenced by Indian culture and become a practitioner of transcendental meditation—decided on using a sitar when The Beatles recorded the song on 12 and 21 October 1965. He later said:
“ During the filming of Help! there were some Indian musicians in a restaurant scene and I kind of messed around with a sitar then. But during that year, towards the end of the year anyway, I kept hearing the name of Ravi Shankar. So I went out and bought a record and that was it. It felt very familiar to me to listen to that music. It was around that time I bought a sitar. I just bought a cheap sitar in a shop called India Craft, in London. It was lying around. I hadn't really figured out what to do with it. When we were working on Norwegian Wood it just needed something, and it was quite spontaneous, from what I remember. I just picked up my sitar, found the notes and just played it. We miked it up and put it on and it just seemed to hit the spot.

Thanks for sharing this BeatleGirl!

I was just listening to Norah Jones latest album (it's really awesome by the way), a few hours before I heard the news Ravi Shankar died... maybe it was a sign? :O

That's weird how Love You To was playing on the radio and you randomly opened up your music history book to Ravi Shankar's page, BeatleGirl!

But wait, I'm confused... there's 2 different Ravi Shankars? The one that died was the one that was George's friend right??

It was March of earlier this year when Beatles News announced that Ravi Shankar died. They mistakenly thought that it was George's friend, so it was corrected.

I'm just sad to know that the Ravi Shankar that we know followed months later. :[

"Don't Know Why" was the first song I heard by Norah Jones in 2002, and during that time the music video for it was played repeatedly on music channels. I really liked it, and her songs are so relaxing!

I also watched Ted (the movie with the living teddy bear starring Mark Wahlberg) and I was surprised she made an appearance in it as one of Ted's "girls"! LMAO.

Seems like we get a lot of signs, Sadie - that or we just listen to music a lot that everything we listen to connects to things that have, are, or will happen! :o

Hey BeatleGirl! Yeah, I first heard of Norah Jones in 2002 too. I was surprised when I first heard her dad is Ravi Shankar!

Yeah I know about the movie Ted, I just haven't seen it yet.

Signs are creepy sometimes! But cool!

And thanks BeatleGirl for clearing that up about the 2 Ravi Shankars so I'm not confused anymore!

I love The Byrds!!!! I didn't know they did Indian inspired music? I know they got into a bit of country/southern rock later on. And Beatlebob, yeah The Rolling Stones played sitar on the song Paint It, Black! They were always copying off The Beatles!!! So were The Monkees!!! and alot of other 60s bands! LOL!!!

I always get Ravi Shankar confused with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.... he died recently too, a few years ago I think??

Well I'll talk to you all later! Have a fab day everyone!!!!!!!! ^_^

BeatleGirl, I like Nora Jones and like that song "Don't Know Why" too. Her songs Are so Relaxing! I haven't seen the movie "Ted" yet, but would like to see it now since you mentioned that! :-)
I thought it was Cool that she sang "Maybe I'm Amazed" with Dave Grohl at the Kennedy Center Honors Paul McCartney concert with McCartney in attendance. December 28, 2010.

re:" Seems like we get a lot of signs, Sadie - that or we just listen to music a lot that everything we listen to connects to things that have, are, or will happen! :o"

Sure seems that way!!

Sadie, Yes, when I first seen The Rolling Stones on the Ed Sullivan show performing Paint It Black, Brian Jones was playing the Sitar. Was so Cool! Even though I heard the song on the radio before seeing that performance. And yeah, they were always copying The Beatles and so were a lot of other 60's bands! LOL! Yes, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi died Feb 6, 2008. He got George and the other Beatles interested in Transcendental Meditation. While Ravi Shanker got George interested in Indian Music etc. ;-)
